What It’s Like Being an ADHD Photographer | Neurodivergent Creatives & Owning Your Magic

ADHD, Creativity & Camera Batteries: What it’s like being an ADHD photographer

Okay, why am I writing this? Because I’m passionate…like, really really passionate….about being an ADHD photographer, living life as a neurodivergent creative, and connecting with others who are in this same, beautifully chaotic boat. Don’t forget I’m a therapist too :) Oh you didnt know that! Well…go follow my instagram and tiktok to keep up with all things mental health and photography! (OH did i just get distracted…YUPPPP)

This blog is part love letter, part journal entry, and part PSA for every ADHD photographer out there: you are not alone, and you do not have to fit into neurotypical boxes to be great at what you do.

My ADHD Superpowers and the Chaos ... of course

Let’s get real. Being ADHD isn’t all “quirky and cute forgetfulness.” It’s layered. It’s intense. It’s a lot BUT I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

What ADHD gives me as a photographer:

  • Creativity that knows no limits

  • The ability to think in ten (more like infinite) directions at once (hello, shot lists!)

  • A deep well of empathy and emotional understanding

  • A gift for connecting with so many different people

What ADHD also gives me (less fun):

  • Focus struggles, especially when editing for hours

  • Inconsistent routines

  • A tendency to take on too many projects (but I just love them all, okay?)

  • Oh, and getting distracted mid-thought… wait, did I already say that?

And still—I love it. Truly. Even when executive dysfunction knocks me over or when I’ve opened Lightroom, Gmail, Spotify, and TikTok all in under 60 seconds. WE’RE not broken. WE’RE wired differently. And WE own that.

Why I Stopped Listening to "Niche Down" Advice

I know I’m “supposed” to niche down as a photographer. And hey, I tried! But I got bored and overwhelmed. I’m not a one-lane creative. I love doing grad photos. I love shooting weddings. Branding sessions? Sign me up. Lifestyle shoots with dogs, babies, or unique props? Literally my jam.

I’m an ADHD photographer, and my niche is doing what lights me up. That’s when I do my best work—when I’m fully present, fully creative, and fully me.

To My Fellow ADHD Photographers: You’re Not Alone

This is for you, ADHD creative soul. You don’t have to follow every piece of traditional photography biz advice. You can build a career that works with your brain, not against it. Some of those loud photography coaches out there? They’re not always neurodivergent-affirming. And that’s okay—we just need more voices like ours.

Disclosure: I’m not offering coaching at the moment, but I am your honorary ADHD photographer BFF from afar. Want to vent about task paralysis? Celebrate a hyperfocus editing marathon? Just say hi? DM me on Instagram. Let’s connect.

Clients, Come Vibe With Me

If you’re looking for a photographer who brings high energy, big emotions, creativity, and ADHD-level enthusiasm to your shoot—hi, hello, let’s make magic. I see things differently, and that’s my superpower. Whether it’s your brand session, your wedding day, or just your dog being cute—I’m here for it, full send.
